Brothers Leonard & Phil Chess were nightclub (The Mocamba, and others) owners on the south side of Chicago. When they realized their more popular performers weren’t getting signed to record deals, they bought into a small label in the 40’s, bought out the remaining partners over a couple of years & changed the name to Chess Records in 1950. In 1969 the label was sold to GRT. The album covers early R&B, including The Miracles track, “Bad Girl”.
