Fourth studio album by the performer from Gary, Indiana. A concept album, addressing contemporary social issues, it met critical acclaim when released. A range of musical styles were used, from rock, pop, & industrial, giving the album broad radio appeal. It remain the only album in Billboard Hot 100 chart history to have seven singles hit the top five, as well as being the first to produce number one hits in three consecutive years. The album hit number one on the Billboard 200, Jackson’s second consecutive album to do so. It sold 12 million global copies & was the best selling album in the US for 1990. The album also received nine Grammy nominations. Certified six times platinum in the US, & platinum in Canada.
